What Is an Optical Bonding Display? A Selection Guide
Author:
Optical bonding is ideal for devices that are used in bright light, outdoors or for frequent touchscreen use. It reduces reflections, improves contrast and increases screen durability. However, not every device needs it.
This article will help you decide whether to use it and which method to choose.
What Is an Optical Bonding Display?
Optical Bonding: The process of using a clear optical adhesive to bond the display and the cover glass or touch layer together across their entire surface area, thereby replacing the air gap between them.
It is also called full lamination.
A standard display module is built from the display, an air gap, and cover glass. Although the air gap is thin, it causes problems. Optical bonding replaces this layer with an optical adhesive, meaning the three layers act as a single unit.
There are two common types of optical adhesive:
- OCA: a pre-formed optical adhesive film.
- OCR / LOCA: a liquid optical adhesive that cures after bonding.
Both remove the air gap, but the processes differ. The comparison is below.
If your device already uses a TFT Display, bonding is usually an extra step added after the module is complete.
Why Do Industrial Devices Need Full Bonding?
Short answer: an air gap makes the screen harder to read and more prone to problems.
When light passes from air into glass, about 4% of it is reflected at each interface. As an air gap has two interfaces, the reflections add up. In bright light, the screen content is washed out by the reflected light.
Full bonding uses an optical adhesive with a refractive index close to that of glass to fill the gap. That leaves fewer reflective surfaces.
Clearer in Bright Light
- Less internal reflection, so contrast improves.
- Text and icons are easier to read in sunlight.
- For the same visibility target, you may not need a brighter backlight.
This matters most for outdoor devices such as fuel dispensers and EV chargers.
More Resistant to Vibration and the Environment
- Cover glass and display form one solid structure.
- With no air gap, moisture has no space to condense inside.
- Dust and dirt have nowhere to get in.
- The adhesive layer cushions the cover glass against impact.
Air Bonding, OCA, or OCR: How to Choose?
Short answer: for modest requirements, choose air bonding. For standard-size volume production, choose OCA. For large or irregular shapes, choose OCR.
Item | Air Bonding | OCA (Adhesive Film) | OCR / LOCA (Liquid Adhesive) |
Method | Edge-only double-sided tape | Full-surface adhesive film | Liquid adhesive filled in, then cured |
Air gap | Yes | No | No |
Optical performance | Average | Good | Good |
Cost | Lowest | Medium | Higher |
Suitable sizes | All sizes | Standard sizes | Large, irregular, curved |
Rework difficulty | Easy | Harder | Harder |
Suitable use | Indoor, simple environments | Volume industrial devices | Outdoor, special shapes |
Air Bonding
- A mature process with stable yield.
- Lowest cost.
- Easy to rework.
- The downside is the air gap, which lets in dust and moisture.
- Visibility in bright light is weaker.
OCA (Optical Adhesive Film)
- The film has uniform thickness.
- Good optical performance.
- Well suited to volume production.
- Alignment requirements are high.
- Better suited to standard-size screens.
OCR / LOCA (Liquid Optical Adhesive)
- The liquid flows into every gap, so bubbles are less likely.
- Suits large screens and irregular cover glass.
- The process needs tight control over adhesive shrinkage and overflow.
- Cost is usually higher than OCA.
Different adhesives vary in temperature resistance and long-term clarity. When selecting, ask your supplier for validation data.
Which Devices Are Worth Bonding?
Short answer: if the device is used outdoors, in bright light, or with frequent touch, evaluate it.
Where It Fits
Device type | Main need | Value of bonding |
Fuel dispensers, EV chargers | Outdoor sunlight, sun and rain | Better visibility, less internal condensation |
Industrial control (HMI) | Glove use, dust and oil | More stable touch, more durable structure |
Hand-held devices | Mobile use, frequent knocks | More solid overall, less dust ingress |
Medical equipment | Frequent cleaning, clear readings | Flat surface cleans easily, clear image |
Automotive | Vibration and temperature swings | Stable structure, less internal reflection |
Medical equipment has its own regulatory requirements. Sonytek supplies display modules and helps customers meet the standards they require.
If your device also uses capacitive touch, evaluate the bonding of the Touch Panel and display together. Bonding the touch layer, cover glass, and display as one gives a more complete structure.
Cost and Limits
Short answer: bonding adds cost and process steps. Spend it where the need is real.
- The process is more complex than air bonding.
- Yield is harder to control, and rework is harder.
- Adhesive and cover glass must be chosen for the environment.
Not every device needs it. For indoor devices with stable lighting, air bonding is often enough.
Questions to Settle Before Selecting (Q&A)
Q: Are optical bonding and full bonding the same thing?
A: Yes. Both terms describe the same type of process: filling the air gap with optical adhesive.
Q: Does my device have to use it?
A: Not necessarily. Indoor devices with stable lighting can start with air bonding. For outdoor and bright-light devices, we recommend evaluating it.
Q: What is the difference between OCA and OCR?
A: OCA is a film, and OCR is a liquid. Standard-size volume production mostly uses OCA. Large or irregular sizes mostly use OCR.
Q: Can a bonded display be reworked?
A: It is harder than air bonding. Some adhesives can barely be reworked at all. Plan for yield and rework at the design stage.
Q: What information should I have ready when asking for a quote?
A: We suggest having these six items ready:
- Display size and resolution
- Cover glass size and thickness
- Whether touch is included
- Operating environment: outdoor or indoor
- Operating temperature range
- Estimated annual volume
Q: Will the adhesive turn yellow or form bubbles over time?
A: The choice of adhesive and the application process both affect long-term performance. Ask your supplier for validation of the adhesive's temperature and weather resistance, and create some test samples first.
