What is a segment LCD?

A Segment LCDalso known as a "character-type" or "segment-style" LCDis a type of liquid crystal display that presents content using a set of pre-designed "segments."

Simply put, unlike the screens found on mobile phones that can display arbitrary images, a Segment LCD is limited to displaying content in fixed shapessuch as numbers, letters, or icons.

Working Principle

Internally, a segmented LCD divides the screen into multiple independent, small regions (segments):

Each "segment" corresponds to a fixed shape (such as a specific stroke of the number 8).

By controlling which segments are turned on or off, numbers or symbols can be formed through combination.

For example, the number 8 is actually made up of a combination of 7 segments (or more).

Common Types

7-Segment Display: Most common (calculators, digital clocks)

14-Segment / 16-Segment: Capable of displaying letters

Custom Segment Display: Includes icons (battery, power level, signal strength, etc.)

Advantages

Ultra-low power consumption (highly energy-efficient)

Low cost

Excellent readability in sunlight

Simple structure and high stability

Disadvantages

Fixed display content; unable to display complex images

Does not support video or animation (limited to simple blinking)

Inflexible design (requires custom mold fabrication)

Application Scenarios

Calculators

Digital watches and alarm clocks

Home appliance panels (e.g. air conditioners, microwaves)

Instrumentation (e.g. electricity meters, water meters)

Industrial Equipment Status Displays

Differences from Dot-Matrix Displays

Segment Display: Fixed graphics; energy-efficient and cost-effective.

Dot-Matrix Display (Graphic LCD / TFT): Free-form display; offers greater functionality but is more expensive.
