Basic Requirements for Industrial Display Screens

Industrial display screens are built for durability, reliability, and stable performance in harsh environments. Unlike consumer displays, they are designed to handle demanding industrial conditions. Here are the key requirements for industrial displays:

1. Wide Operating Temperature Range

Industrial environments can be really hot or really cold. Displays have to be able to stay stable in these conditions.

  • Standard industrial grade: -20°C to 70°C
  • Enhanced industrial grade: -30°C to 80°C (or wider)
  • Consumer-grade displays: typically 0°C to 50°C

2. High Brightness & Excellent Readability

Industrial displays must be easy to see when they are under strong lights or sunlight.

  • Indoor factory environments: 300–500 nits
  • Semi-outdoor or high-brightness areas: ≥1,000 nits
  • Full sunlight applications: 2,000–2,500 nits

Optical bonding is often used to reduce glare, improve contrast, and make the product more durable.

3. Dust & Water Resistance (IP Protection)

Protection against dust, moisture and water is vital for uses in industry and outside.

  • Front panel protection: IP65 (dust-tight and resistant to water jets)
  • Full enclosure protection: IP67 (dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion)

4. Shock & Vibration Resistance

Industrial displays need to be able to resist vibration and impacts that happen as part of making, transporting, and delivering products.

  • Vibration resistance: 1.5G or higher (IEC 60068-2-6)
  • Impact resistance: IK07–IK10 (IEC 62262)

Typical designs include metal casings, robust structures, and parts to stop vibrations.

5. Long-Term Reliability for 24/7 Operation

Industrial displays are built to last.

  • LED backlight lifespan: ≥50,000 hours
  • MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures): ≥50,000 hours
  • Product lifecycle support: 5–10 years

This is much longer than normal, because other displays usually have to be replaced more often.

6. Wide Viewing Angles

Displays should remain clear and readable from different viewing positions.

  • Preferred technology: IPS panels
  • Viewing angles: ≥170° horizontal and vertical

IPS technology is better than TN panels at colour consistency and viewing performance.

7. Industrial Interfaces & System Compatibility

Industrial displays should be easy to connect with industrial control systems and embedded platforms.

Common interfaces include:

  • LVDS
  • eDP
  • HDMI
  • MIPI DSI

In industrial environments, some systems can even talk to each other using protocols like Modbus, CANbus and Profinet.

8. Touch Functionality (Optional)

Many industrial displays are used as HMI (Human-Machine Interface) devices and require touch capability.

  • Resistive touch: Supports glove operation and offers strong noise immunity
  • PCAP capacitive touch: Supports multi-touch and high sensitivity

Additional surface treatments may include:

  • 3H–4H hardness coating
  • Anti-glare (AG) treatment

9. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)

Industrial displays have to be able to withstand electromagnetic interference from motors, power systems, and wireless equipment.

Common certifications include:

  • CE (EN 55032)
  • FCC Part 15
  • RoHS

EMC protection is typically achieved through shielded enclosures and filtered power designs.

10. Flexible Mechanical Customization

Industrial applications often require custom sizes and installation methods.

  • Display sizes: 7” to 32” (custom sizes available)
  • Mounting options:
    • Panel mount
    • Wall mount
    • Rack mount
    • Open-frame design

Displays are also available in standard, widescreen, and ultra-wide formats depending on the application.

Conclusion

Industrial display screens are built to last, they're stable and you can use them 24/7. They've got a wide temperature tolerance, they're really bright, they're toughly protected, and you can customise them however you want. So it's no wonder they're used all over the place, like in factories, on transport, in energy systems, medical equipment, and outdoors.
