COB LCD Gains Traction in Cost-Sensitive Small-Device Markets

COB (Chip on Board) LCD technology is solidifying its position in cost-sensitive small-size display applications, thanks to its high integration and mass production advantages. According to industry data, COB LCD modules dominate the low-power small-device segment, with applications ranging from smart watches and handheld gadgets to simple meters. The technology’s core strength lies in reducing circuit complexity, which lowers production costs significantly compared to alternative packaging methods. However, industry experts note limitations, including limited heat dissipation that restricts use in large or high-resolution displays. Despite these constraints, COB remains a preferred choice for budget consumer electronics, with major manufacturers reporting steady demand growth in emerging markets. A recent analysis from Sinocrystal Display shows that COB accounts for over 60% of the monochrome small-size LCD market, as it balances cost efficiency with reliable performance for basic display needs. Manufacturers are also exploring incremental improvements in heat management to expand COB’s application scope.
